Fortunately there haven't been any wars since World War II in Hungary and in the socialist era there were not so big differences between people's financial state. Since the changing of the regime in 1989 this "equality"  has ceased and big crowds have lost their jobs and become poor  while others  became really rich.  Homelessness and begging appeared at that time and unfortunately, our governments could not  solve this problem.. The  recent economic crisis has also made the situation worse and now one third of the population lives under the poverty line, which gives a  very bad prospect  for the future.  Our biggest problems  are that there are not enough jobs and the wages are  very low in comparison with wages in other  parts of Europe. In many cases poverty was situational  but it turned into generational.

Fortunately, diseases like AIDS and malaria are not problems here but tubercolosis  started spreading  in the  poorer areas. Pregnant women have to take part in regular medical check ups and they get medication if they need.  There are state district nurses  who are responsible for looking after them and their babies.

There are several foundations, organisations and churches as well which try to help the poor by distributing food, running shelters for homeless people and organising summer camps or providing free  school lunch for poor children.

These two photos were taken at Easter when volunteers were giving out food to poor people.

This is how long the queue was in the capital.

Children going to summer camp.

From my research, it appears that 51% of poverty is Generational, 37% is Situational, and 11% didn't respond. Canadians more likely to live in poverty are children, unattached non-elderly, single parents, Aboriginal Canadians, recent immigrants, people with disabilities, and seniors.

Yes, our country is providing the proper encouragement and facilities. Government and health care systems are trying to ensure responsible access to diagnosis, treatment, support and rehabilitation as well as providing prevention services to reduce on going infections. Canada has prevention services such as the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN), the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE). In Canada, the main treatment for AIDS is HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy) which works to slow the rate of which HIV multiplies in the body. Which allows the immune system to stay healthy, delaying the progression of the disease AIDS.

Poverty in Canada is equally situational and generational.

The global poverty goal has been slowed because of the lack of money.  This means that developed countries are putting less money into the global economy. The economy has been declining for the last few years in Canada and the world.

Canada is one of the best countries in terms of health care. For maternal health , a pregnant woman, father, or parental figure can take a year off work and get paid through the government parental leave.  We also have welfare programs for families who have low incomes.  Canada also has government housing programs that allow people affordable housing based on their income and what they can afford.  We have some affordable housing developments in Fergus. Canada is also involved in the global fund to fight aids and malaria.

Some of the things the government is doing to help are:

reduced tax burden

social government programs

working income tax benefit

child credits (baby bonus)

minimum wage in Canada is between $9.27-$11.00

non government assistance

private charity and advocacy

Hello!

We are students Gunta and Inguna from Kraslava State Gymnasium. We will try to answer your questions.

How much of the poverty that your countries experience is situational and how much is generational?

The poverty in our country is both situational and generational. Generational poverty is connected with the history of Latvia as different regions of the country had been integral parts of other states for centuries and poverty was a common thing. Latvia became an independent country only in 1918 and its economy started to develop rapidly. However, it was interrupted in 1940 when Latvia was incorporated in the Soviet Union which slowed down its development. Only in 1991 our country regained independence.

With the global economic downturn the living conditions of the population of Latvia worsened, especially in not so economically developed south-eastern regions of the country. Poverty increased as people lost jobs and their salaries were cut dramatically.

How has poverty changed with the recent economic global downturn?

The external debt burden and the global economic downturn have affected people's economic, social and cultural rights. With the beginning of the economic downturn, the citizens' disposable income diminished by 16%. The downturn influenced increase in unemployment and decrease of average wages, pensions and allowances in 2009. The number of pensioners who received the minimal pensions (till 140 Euro) reached 23% in 2008. According to the statistics, 425,000 people (19%) were exposed to the risk of poverty in 2010. Without social allowances, pensions and other recopenses, 46% of Latvian population would be at resk of poverty. Unemployment in Latvia in 2007 ranged from 3,2 to 9,4 %, but in 2009 it was 18.7% and became the second biggest in the EU.

Is your country providing the proper encouragement and facilities for people to fight maternal health problems and diseases such as Malaria and AIDs?

In Latvia ill people and young mothers are not left without help. The government has worked out a plan of improving the child and maternal health for 2012-2014 in order to educate mothers and also to support them financially, for instance, covering 25% of the costs of the drugs they need and providing free health care.

People don`t suffer from malaria in our country, but the AIDS/HIV infection rate is 0,36%. In Latvia there is the national Programme for Limiting the Spread of HIV for 2009–2013 and the Association HIV.LV which consists of 8 organisations. The Association covers all regions of Latvia. Their goals are to improve overall life quality for people living with HIV/AIDS, while actively taking part in creation of the state HIV/AIDS policy and not allow any kind of discrimination of people in Latvia who live with HIV/AIDS and to protect them.

We hope that our information will be useful for you.

Good-bye,

Gunta and Inguna, mdg5

We are a developing nation. We got independence in 1971. There was a war with Pakistan and we got independence. This war and flood and the oppression of Pakistan made us economically weak and many people lived below poverty line. But now the situation has changed. There are many poor people but few seldom die of hunger, We have a fertile land and good crops grow. Moreover many people live in foreign countries. They send foreign remittance. For this reason both situational and generational poverty is not acute in our country.

It is interesting to mention that, while the whole world is facing economic setback, our country is in a privileged condition. This is due to two factors mainly. Many of our people live in foreign countries as workers and in other professions. They continually send money to our country for their relatives and business purposes.

For the last two decades the national health condition of the average people of our country has improved a lot. Many national and international organisations run many projects here that look after child and mother health. Two organisations have done a great job in this regard. The Grameen Bank and BRAC. These two organisations have made the poor and rural people self reliant.

The government is also trying to reduce poverty from the country. There are many projects that govt has taken in hand to help child health

To begin with we should say that we are lucky not to have wars for many years. That`s why we don`t consider poverty to be the major problem in our country. People don’t die of hunger in spite of the number of homeless people in our country. Sometimes we can see some people who find something in the rubbish containers. But it doesn’t mean that they can’t earn money for living, they simply don’t want to do it because of different reasons. It’s a pity that they are often middle-aged people. They lost interest to the life and chose such a way of living. Certainly, not all the families are wealthy, especially aged people who are on pension and don’t have the opportunity to work, can’t have food of high quality, as everything is rather expensive in our country. Some of them, who are not helped by their relatives, have to survive, as the average  amount of a pension is not so big. Though they have the right to pay less money for the flat, gas, electricity their life isn’t very easy. Global crisis made negative influence on the economy of the country and consequently on people’s lives. But  on the whole, the situation isn’t so threatening. And we hope for the best. There a lot of supermarkets, different shops and markets in the towns and cities. More and more of new ones appear every day. There are a lot of various food products in them. We know, that if there were no demand in them they wouldn’t be built and opened.

We can’t name any diseases caused by poverty problems. There is some problem with tuberculosis in the country. Sometimes it’s conditioned by bad nourishment and expensive treatment. As to Malaria, people don’t suffer from such a disease. As to AIDs there is a number of people who suffer from it or have theVirus of the immunity deficit. There are some Government programs which provide the improvement of the situation, but it’s not enough for solving the problem as the treatment of the disease is very expensive and few people can afford themselves to be cured. Also  some help from charity exists too. But there is lack money and it makes the problem difficult.

Our country takes  care of  maternal health problems very much. All pragnant women in the country are payed much attention to. All pragnant women regularly are examined and cured, if necessary. They are cured in special departments of maternity hospitals. Working  pregnant women  get maternity benefit and maternity leave: two months before giving a birth to a chid and three years after the birth. These leaves are payed by the Government. In  some cases women are given a leave for six years, but after three years without paying.

To make it short, we hope our response will be interesting and informative for you.

Best wishes,

Mdg7.

Poverty is a major problem, which many countries are dealing with, including my country, Romania. This problem started in 2007 and the largest generation of people who are dealing with it is the generation of teenagers. They have a lot of problems caused by poverty, because they can’t take a job when they finish school. So, poverty is a major problem for humanity, especially for teenagers.

Poverty makes a lot of problems in my country, especially when the global economy decreased. In 2007 the poverty grew in Romania, but people are doing everything they can to stabilize it. So, the poverty has decreased since the first year of global economy downturn.

Yes, my country is providing the proper encouragement for people to fight against diseases such as AIDS. People are informed by special programs against this big problem. So, the state of Romania is fighting with disease like AIDS with institutions and organizations like “Close to you” Foundation, “Heart of child” Foundation and many other institutions. Regarding Malaria, Romania doesn’t register any cases.

Most of the povertry in Romania is generational.

Povertry is highlighted by the economic crisis, which has been installed in our country for more than 5 years.

But many romanians have gotten used with the idea of economic crisis and povertry and it is, unfortunately, treated with indifference.

In our country povertry is generated by a bad economic situation.

In fact, bad economy is generated by a bad situation of tourism because we have a lot of unexploited touristic potential.

Another reason for bad situation of tourism is the reputation almost nonexistent of our beauties and what we have to offer in terms of landscapes, traditions, food and winter sports.

There are several HIV fighting programs, but not that many.

Answer from mdg10

Poverty has become an increasingly spread problem. Why? Well, in 1970 the well-known financial crise was triggered. Because of that, the standard of living decreased, the wages and the unemployement rate increased considerably.

Acording to the Mondial Bank, the percentage of people living in poverty will be 9.1. About 41% of the population present a risk of poverty or  social exclution. Unfortunately, children are just some  innocent victims of this economical tragedy.

The rate of unemployement was one of the smallest in E.U., being estimated about 6.5%.

The smallest average wage/month will be recorded in the north-east of the country. It’s value will reach a bit above 1.300 lei (293.546 euros).

What is our state doing  about that? Well, there are a lot of foundations wich help the poor population, there are people who make donations like food, clothes or money. Everybody try to do their best.

What do I do to help? As a child I can’t do very much but when I see a beggar on the street I try to give him the little money I have in my pocket or the piece of food I have.
