 3. Questions, 25 February – 10 March 2013

Week 2-3

Each class formulates a question on their Learning Circle theme according to criteria for quality research sponsored question.

mdg1, Ahliah School, Lebanon, Question:

Being a country that has witnessed successive wars during more than three decades, poverty is a major problem.

-How much of the poverty that your countries experience is situational and how much is generational?

-How has poverty changed with the recent economic global downturn?

Since poverty is of a direct relation with health care issues,

-Is your country providing the proper encouragement and facilities for people to fight maternal health problems and diseases such as Malaria and AIDs?

Mention some of the ongoing projects related to this issue.

mdg2, Nemes Nagy Ágnes Humán Szakközépiskola, Hungary, Question:

We are interested in AIDS and HIV and we would like to know more about this topic. So here are our questions:

1. What is the proportion of population suffering in AIDS in your country? How does the proportion of new patients change year by year?

2. What kind of treatment do the patients get and is it available for everyone, is it free?

3. How do teenagers in your country get information about preventing getting infected? What steps can you make to avoid the infection?

We are looking forward to your answers! :)

mdg3, Angus Morrison Elementary School, Canada , Question:

GOAL 3:  PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN

Target 3.A:   Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015

  • For girls in some regions, education remains elusive
  • Poverty is a major barrier to education, especially among older girls
  • In every developing region except the CIS, men outnumber women in paid employment
  • Women are largely relegated to more vulnerable forms of employment
  • Women are over-represented in informal employment, with its lack of benefits and security
  • Top-level jobs still go to men — to an overwhelming degree
  • Women are slowly rising to political power, but mainly when boosted by quotas and other special measures

Our Question(s):

Of the sub-targets listed above, which one poses the biggest concern for your country? Are there any other significant gender equality issues other than those outlined by the United Nations that affect your country?

Which issue do you feel mostly affects women and gender equality throughout the world a) historically and b) in today's society? Why?

Recently, the media has covered a story about a young social activist in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by Taliban insurgents for speaking out about education for girls. In Canada, we also have young activists who strive for gender equality in education (e.g., Alaina Podmorrow, a 15 year-old girl who has started an NGO called Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan). Are you aware of any young social activists in your country that are addressing gender equality issues and what are they doing?

Do you feel that the United Nations will achieve their gender equality/empowerment of women goal(s) by 2015? Why or why not?

mdg4, Centre Wellington District High School, Canada, Question:

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

Target: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation

Water and sanitation are an integral aspect of ensuring environmentally sustainability; however, their availability also influences health, education, gender issues and the economy, making them also central to achieving several of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

How does access to clean water and sanitation influence health, education, gender equality and the economy? What is the UN doing to ensure that they will achieve this goal by 2015? What are some of the issues surrounding access to clean water and sanitation in your country? locally in  your community? How can we as individuals help to conserve water locally?

Our question is connected with Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
